Building an Information Ecosystem that Drives Progress

The Challenge

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) mission is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce economic costs associated with motor vehicle crashes. From crash test ratings to vehicle recalls, technology, data, and information sharing are at the heart of everything the agency does.

So, when the agency realized that its siloed and inefficient IT infrastructure was impacting its ability to meet its mission, it turned to VersaTech for help.

VersaTech in Action

For more than a decade, VersaTech has been the technology partner responsible for developing, maintaining, and optimizing an enterprise-level information ecosystem that fuels collaboration and drives NHTSA’s mission forward.

From network communications and cybersecurity to end-user services and enterprise applications, VersaTech oversees it all so that NHTSA staff nationwide can pursue the agency’s mission with confidence. Highlights include:

  • Full-service technical support to more than 700 personnel, contractors, and customers across all NHTSA devices and software
  • Data center operations and maintenance, covering more than 500 virtual servers and 60 physical servers to support NHTSA staff at 14 campuses and users in all 50 states
  • Management of over 40 applications, half of which are public-facing, including the NHTSA.gov website which can get up to 1 million visits per hour
  • Design and delivery of highly specialized project suites that enable inter-agency and public-private sector collaboration, such as the Drug Recognition Expert Data (DREData) system and the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) management suite
  • Executive-level program management, including strategic planning, capacity planning, enterprise architecture, budgeting, analysis, and quarterly reporting on emerging technologies

CONFIDENCE Delivered

NHTSA’s VersaTech-powered information ecosystem is enabling the agency to work, collaborate, and advance its mission more intelligently and more efficiently at every level.

Within the CAFE management suite alone, the agency has achieved 75% time savings on entering and compiling fuel economy data and a 65% time savings on processing transactions that impact auto manufacturers across the globe—a productivity boost that allows fuel safety stakeholders to make smarter decision decisions faster.

The project earned accolades for NHTSA’s leadership from the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary, and was called “the shining star at NHTSA” by NHTSA CIO Colleen Coggins. And it’s just one small example of the game-changing advancements an organization can make when it has complete confidence in its technology systems.
